JUNGLE CUYABENO RESERVE

cuyabenoreserva

The Cuyabeno Reserve is the largest remaining tropical rainforest on earth; we call it the "Oriente". It covers more than half of Ecuador's surface, with its amazing biodiversity, it represents one of the wildest, most wildlife-packed rain forests of the world, with one of the highest densities of endemic plants and animals. The Upper Amazon has the highest diversity of trees in the world, with more than 1500 species and an average of nearly 300 per hectare.

Birdwatchers may observe up to 100 birds in a day, from the smallest hummingbird to the huge king vulture or the biggest bird of prey, the famous Harpy Eagle. The jungle is also home to different types of mammals, for example 12 species of primates are recorded in the Yasuní National Park. Sometimes a Jaguar can be observed along the river, as can capybaras, tapirs, caimans, otters and river dolphins. This tropical rainforest is home to nearly 200 distinct indigenous cultures.

Life in the jungle is very informal. Comfortable and lightweight clothes are necessary. Bring long pants, cotton shorts, long-sleeved T-shirts, sneakers, sandals, hat / cap, sunglasses, rain gear, insect repellent, sunscreen, flashlight with extra batteries, binoculars, reading material.

During your time in the jungle, you will participate in a variety of activities from trekking through the undergrowth, canoeing along the waterways or even swinging from vines, all the while looking out for some of the jungles' resident animals; caiman, monkeys and macaws to name just three from a long list.

In addition, you will visit indigenous communities to learn and understand more about traditional jungle life, and the Indians' interaction with the environment for their communities' survival.
In the Amazon region, the climate is hot and humid with frequent rain showers. The drier months are from October. The temperature ranges from 19°C to 36°C throughout the year.
